    Wildland Firefighting

California Air National Guard Maj. Cameron Shepard and Maj. Jon-Mark Koetitz assigned to the 115th Airlift Squadron follow a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) lead plane while ejecting water from a Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) equipped C-130J Super Hercules above the Tahoe National Forest, California, April 20, 2026. Department of War (DOW) personnel go through rigorous certification prior to participating in this aerial wildland fire mission, executing a whole-of-government response by collaborating with our interagency partners with the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). U.S. Northern Command’s Air Component Command, is the DoW’s operational lead for the aerial wildland firefighting military efforts. The team is committed to excellence through training and interagency relationships. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Nicholas Carzis)
