Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay (WTGB 102) conducts a breakout of the beset vessel Algoma Niagara in the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan on Jan. 23, 2026. The Bristol Bay is a 140-foot bay class cutter designed to break ice up to three feet thick. As a part of Operation Coal Shovel, Bristol Bay regularly conducts direct assists and ice escorts for vessels in Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and the connecting rivers and waterways.
