USAT Royal T. Frank was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Alenuihāhā Channel while carrying Hawaiʻi Guardsmen returning home from training on Jan. 28, 1942. Seventeen Soldiers lost their lives in the sinking, while nine survived.
