    USS JOHN L. CANLEY BLUE

The USS John L. Canley (ESB-6) is the fourth Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary sea base and the sixth ship in the expeditionary mobile base platform. It is named in honor of Sergeant Major John L. Canley, a Medal of Honor recipient for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. The ship was commissioned on February 17, 2024 and is homeport based out of San Diego, California with routine attachments to 7th Fleet Operations.

The USS John L. Canley is a highly flexible platform used for a broad range of military operations. As a mobile sea base, it is a critical part of the infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies. The ship's core capabilities are built around four main areas: aviation facilities, berthing, equipment staging support, and command and control assets.

The USS John L. Canley operates with a hybrid crew model. The ship's navigation, seamanship, and engineering are handled by civilian mariners from the Military Sealift Command. The military operations, including aviation, communications, and security, are managed by two rotating military crews, known as Blue and Gold crews. The total complement includes 5 officers, 96 enlisted sailors, and 44 Military Sealift Command personnel.
