アルフレッド・スティーグリッツはドイツ系移民の子として、ニュージャージー州ホーボケンに生まれた。17歳でベルリンの工科学校ポリテクニックに留学し、写真化学を学び、同時に写真を撮り始める。24歳のときにロンドンの国際写真サロン展で一等賞を獲得し、スティーグリッツはその名を知られるようになった。

ピーター・ヘンリー・エマーソンは1856年、キューバに生まれた。英国に渡って医学を学んでいたとき、英国東部のイースト・アングリア地方の風景や人びとにすっかり魅せられてしまう。イースト・アングリア地方は河川や湖沼が縦横に入り組んだ土地で、そこで暮らす人々は小舟で行き来して、農地や河川、沼沢の陸と水辺から糧を得る生活をしていた。
