1871年、イギリス人医師リチャード・リーチ・マドックス（1816~1902）は、臭化銀をゼラチンに混ぜた感光乳剤を、ガラス板に塗布して乾燥させたゼラチン乾板を開発した。乾板は携帯性や保存性に優れ、工場での大量生産も可能となり、箱入りで販売されるようになる。乾板を持ち運んであらゆる場所での写真撮影が可能となり、この新技術によって湿板写真はあっという間に駆逐され、代わって乾板は世界中に広まった
