‘Devil’ brigade to host change of command ceremony — FORT RILEY, Kan. –The 1st Infantry Division’s 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team will welcome their new commander while bidding farewell to their outgoing commander during a change of command ceremony on Fort Riley’s Cavalry Parade Field July 12. During the ceremony, Col. Timothy C. Hayden will relinquish command of the brigade to Col. Charles S. Armstrong. The unit will also uncase its colors, signifying the “Devil” brigade’s recent return from its South Korea deployment. Armstrong comes to the 1st ABCT from the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, and U.S. Northern Command where he served as the command center director. Hayden’s next assignment will be the Brookings Institution Fellowship at the U.S. Army War College. The ceremony comes shortly after the brigade completed a nine-month deployment to South Korea in support of the U.S. – South Korean alliance, where Devil Soldiers provided security to the peninsula and deterrence to North Korean aggression. -30- Media interested in attending the ceremony should contact the 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Office at (785) 240-1796 or via email at jason.p.roberts22.ctr@mail.mil. Victory Week to celebrate ‘Big Red One’ centennial Aug. 16-25 — In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the “Big Red One,” the 1st Infantry Division will host its annual Victory Week Aug. 16-25 on Fort Riley. The public is invited to witness events of camaraderie and remembrance throughout the week. To help keep Big Red One supporters in the greater Fort Riley and Flint Hills communities informed, the 1st Inf. Div. public affairs office has created a series of posters and fliers you may use in your publications or reporting. Included among these are posters highlighting the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Ceremony scheduled for Aug. 23. Combat Aviation Brigade to change command — FORT RILEY, Kan. – The 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, will host a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. July 7 at the post’s Cavalry Parade Field. Col. John M. Cyrulik will relinquish command to Col. Chris Black after two years in command of the “Demon” brigade. Cyrulik is slated to become the commandant at Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina. Black comes from Duke University where he served as a fellow in National Security, Strategy and Policy. Brig. Gen. Patrick D. ‘Big Red One’ headquarters to return from Iraq — FORT RILEY, Kan. — More than 300 Soldiers with the 1st Infantry Division headquarters are set to return this month from a nine-month deployment to Iraq and Kuwait. The first welcome-home ceremony is scheduled for 4 a.m. July 7 on Fort Riley’s Camp Funston. The “Big Red One” headquarters deployed in October 2016 and assumed the role of Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command – Operation Inherent Resolve. In that role, the division headquarters provided command and control of Coalition troops training, advising and assisting Iraqi Security Forces. While deployed, Maj. Gen. Joseph Martin, 1st Inf. Div. and Fort Riley commanding general, served as commanding general of CJFLCC. During that time, 1.8 million people were liberated in Mosul, Iraq, which has been under ISIS control since June 2014. Since October 2016, more than 350,000 children have returned to school in Mosul, 320 schools have reopened and 195,000 internally displaced persons have returned to their homes in Mosul. Under the 1st Inf. Div.’s leadership, 30,000 Iraqi Security Forces Soldiers were trained and almost 5,000 square kilometers of ground was liberated in Mosul. All members of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Inf. 1ID to honor outgoing deputy commanding general at Victory with Honors — FORT RILEY, Kan. – The 1st Infantry Division will honor Brig. Gen. Patrick D. Frank, the outgoing acting senior commander of the division and Fort Riley, in a Victory with Honors Ceremony at 4 p.m. June 27 at the “Big Red One” headquarters building. Frank assumed duties as the acting senior commander in October 2016. He previously served as the deputy commanding general for support for the 1st Infantry Division, executive officer to the International Security Assistance Force / Operation Resolute Support commander and executive officer to the vice chief of staff of the Army. The brigadier general will next serve as the deputy commanding general of the Army Cadet Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky. Taking his place as the acting senior commander is Brig. Gen. William A. Turner, deputy commanding general for sustainment for the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command – Operation Inherent Resolve, Baghdad. The Victory with Honors ceremony will include remarks by Frank, Turner and British Army Maj. Gen. ‘Dagger’ brigade Soldier dies at Milford Lake — FORT RILEY, Kan. – A 1st Infantry Division Soldier died June 11 at Milford Lake near Milford, Kansas. Spc. Xavier Harden, a food service specialist with Forward Support Company D, 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., entered the lake from a boat at about 2:30 p.m. and did not resurface. His body was recovered at 5:25 p.m. “This is a tragic loss for the entire ‘Longknife’ family,” said Lt. Col. Dave Maxwell, commander of 5th Sqdn., 4th Cav. Regt. “We are supporting and will continue to support Xavier’s family through this difficult time.” Harden arrived at Fort Riley in June 2016. He was 23 years old. His home of record is Tolleson, Arizona. His awards include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. The incident remains under investigation.   less
