Warrant Officer Gerard L. Gormley stared at the screen in front of him, looking for the target many miles away to come into view. He used a control stick to adjust the unmanned craft’s course and other dials to remotely manage speed. The scene has become familiar in the post-9/11 era. But Gormley was not piloting a UAV over Afghanistan or Iraq. It was mid-April 1945, and he was part of a secret joint project of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the Army Air Forces that was first codenamed Campbell and later known as Javaman.
