YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities, Yokosuka Morale, Welfare and Recreation held a grand reopening and cake cutting ceremony Nov. 29 to commemorate the renovation of Building B-48.

Presiding over the ribbon cutting ceremony was Commander FLEACT, Yokosuka Capt. David Owen, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Far East Public Works Officer Cmdr. Steve Stasick, and MWR outdoor recreation director Steven Marksberry.

Building B-48 is located next to the James R. Kelly Fleet Recreation Center on the corner of Howard St. and Nimitz Blvd.

B-48 is also home to the Wood Hobby Shop, the T-shirts and Plaques Shop, the Ceramics Shop, the USS George Washington (CVN-73) Patriots’ Landing division, and the soon-to-open USO, which is being relocated to B-48.

Though the ceremony was held Nov. 29, the center has been open since Nov. 15, since it returned to the building after almost a year in a temporary location.

ORC rental manager Jayson Hilliard said that he and his fellow employees like the new open, brighter spaces now and that it actually looks like a real shop again.

“Customer feedback has been very positive so far, we’re really glad that everyone likes it,” he said.

Marksberry said that the old building structurally wasn’t going to fall down, but the inside was a disaster.

B-48 was originally built in 1939 and over the years, a number of structural issues developed that needed resolving.

According to Marksberry, the renovations began in November 2011, and were completed at a cost of just under $5.3 million.

“The lack of an air conditioning system allowed temps to soar to over 98 degrees in the summer which made for difficult working conditions for the employees,” Marksberry said.

He also said the electrical system was outdated, and fire suppression system in half of the building was inadequate and the heating system was outdated and worked in only part of the building.

Marksberry said the improvements resolved all building codes and improved the cooling and heating systems, and added the large second floor recreational space. According to Hilliard, ORC is currently holding their customer satisfaction survey now and upon completion of the questionnaire, customers will be entered into a drawing to win a free skiing or snowboarding day trip or a free two-night stay at their VIP cabin in Ikego.

“We’re getting into our snow season and we’re getting the word out that our ski and snowboarding trips are coming up and we have rental gear available,” he said.
