YOKOSUKA, Japan - Yokosuka Morale, Welfare and Recreation Navy Fitness program presented awards to sailors during the 2012 Captain’s Cup Awards ceremony at the Chief Petty Officers’ Club Major room onboard Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Dec. 5.
Captain’s Cup events, which are held throughout the year, give sailors opportunities to stay active, release stress by competing in a variety of individual and co-recreational team sports such as flag football, basketball, volleyball, softball, powerlifting and 5-kilometer runs.
“We are here to celebrate the 10th year of this program,” said Kyle Rhodus, MWR athletic director. “This Captain’s Cup program is by far the most robust Captain’s Cup program in the U.S. Navy. We held more than 40 sports events throughout the year and 30 events on the intramural side.”
Highlights from this year’s Captain Cup events include Commander Submarine Group 7’s “four-peat” as champions in the co-rec and men’s divisions and “three-peat” champion in the women's division.
In men’s major sports, FLEACT, Yokosuka won in basketball, softball, flag football and floor hockey. USS McCampbell (DDG 56) won in soccer and USS George Washington (CVN 73) won Navy sports week.
“This goes to show that the Captain’s Cup program is mainly based on participation, which involves getting your sailors out and participate in the events.” said Rhodus. “That’s how you truly win Captain’s Cup, not just the success of individual sports.”
There were 36 commands that participated in the men’s division, 38 commands in the women’s division and 16 commands participating in the co-rec division.
“There was a lot of competition, a lot of spirit de corps, tempers flared every now and then, but everything came out okay,” said Commander FLEACT, Yokosuka Capt. David Owen. “There were a couple of injuries, from torn Achilles to broken fingers, but despite that, this was a good time.”
