KABUL, Afghanistan — All across Kabul, soldiers deployed from the Texas National Guard as Task Force Centurion celebrated the 376th year of the National Guard—a force that continues to serve dual missions at home and abroad.
On Camp Phoenix, Brig. Gen. William A. Hall, Task Force Centurion commander and Commander of the 136th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade marked the anniversary with special remarks along with the unit’s oldest and youngest soldiers.
“I joined the Guard a year ago because I wanted to do more with my life,” said Pfc. Darien Sanders of the 179th Military Police Company, Georgia Army National Guard. “Since I have been in, it’s been a privilege to graduate from basic training recently and already be on my first deployment. I am only nineteen.”
The unit’s oldest member joined active duty in 1972.
“Over the years some things have changed. We have become more professional as an Army, better trained, better equipped and better prepared,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) James Tillman of Task Force Centurion. “Uniforms change, technology changes, but what doesn’t change is our commitment to uphold the Constitution. It’s the Army values that don’t change.”
Hall also visited other camps in the Kabul Base Cluster during the day. Task Force Centurion is responsible for the security and management of eight coalition bases in Kabul. The Round Rock, Texas-based brigade is nearly one-third complete with its nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.
