    FORT HOOD, Texas - Fort Hood officials have released the name of a soldier who died after battling a serious illness Dec. 6 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

    Sergeant Charles Joseph Menard, 27, whose home of record is Benton Harbor, Mich., was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, since June 2012. He entered active duty service in January 2004 as an Air Defense Battle Management System operator.

    Menard deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from April 2011 to April 2012.

    Menard's awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, five Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Army Overseas Service Ribbons, NATO Medal and Basic Space Badge.
