MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. – An ordnance department chief assigned to Marine Aviation Logistic Squadron 26, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station New River died Thursday after conducting personal physical training.
Master Gunnery Sgt. James J. Petrongelli, 46, a native of Chicago Heights, Ill., was rushed to Onslow Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m. The cause of death is still under investigation.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1983 and was promoted to his current rank in 2008.
Petrongelli deployed in support of various operations, most recently Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009.
His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of fourth award, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with a silver star and 3 bronze stars in lieu of ninth award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Campaign ribbon.
