NAPLES, Italy - On Nov. 23, Vice Adm. Rinaldo Veri, commander Maritime Command Naples presided over the Operational Handover of command of the Standing NATO maritime Force 2 (SNMG2) from Rear Adm. Thorsten Kahler to RAdm Antonio Natale of the Italian Navy. The ceremony was held in the naval base of Taranto, Italy, aboard the new SNMG2 Flagship ITS San Marco.
Under the command of Rear Adm. Natale, SNMG2 will shortly set sail for the Indian Ocean to lead NATO's anti-piracy operation Ocean Shield.
Vice Adm. Rinaldo Veri thanked Rear Adm. Kahler, his international staff aboard the frigate Bayern, and all the crews who had served under him, for his important military and diplomatic contribution to NATO's Maritime Activities over the last six months. Vice Adm. Veri pointed out in particular the role played by SNMG2 in Operation Active Endeavour as well as the numerous NATO and non-NATO port calls which the Group carried out.
During the ceremony, Vice Adm. Rinaldo Veri awarded staff members of SNMG2 with the NATO Article 5 medal for participation in Operation Active Endeavour.
