Statement:
The U.S. military is committed to the good order and discipline within our host Okinawa community. Our goal is to reduce incidents and accidents while simultaneously enhancing the strong Japan – United States relationship in Okinawa. To accomplish this goal, we continuously review and implement actions that foster healthy relationships in local communities.
To strengthen our incident and accident prevention measures, U.S. forces on Okinawa will immediately institute additional courtesy patrols in the Naha city area, comprised of three teams of four individuals representing all services. Members of each patrol will hold leadership positions. The U.S. military in Okinawa already conducts courtesy patrols in the Chatan, Mihama and Kadena Gate 2 areas. These additional patrols will operate between the hours of 2200 and 0530 in civilian clothes. The purpose of these patrols is only to confirm the observance of the curfew policy by service members.
The mission of U.S. Forces in Okinawa is to accomplish military responsibilities and obligations in support of the United States – Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. To effectively accomplish this mission, we continue to build and actively maintain good relations with the local communities. A major component of this effort is incident and accident prevention.
Every service member is expected to take personal responsibility for his or her off-duty conduct, and we continue to be unwavering in our commitment to educate and enforce exemplary, high standards of professionalism.
The U.S. Military is committed to ensuring service members are respectful and courteous within their communities while exercising established core values. The overwhelming majority of American service members, dependents and DoD civilian employees are law abiding, well-disciplined and respectful guests in Japan.
In addition to courtesy patrols, liberty curfew measures and the extensive educational measures in place, the military institutes and actively participates in numerous base support and community outreach programs on Okinawa to build mutual trust and respect between the U.S. military and the community. Service members in Okinawa participate in more than 1,500 community relations events throughout the year, including annual festivals, to sporting events, to beach cleanups, music festivals, and more.
The U.S. military remains committed to strengthening a positive relationship with our Okinawa hosts, friends and community.
