QUANTICO, Va - The best players in the National League for intramural softball met up with the best players from the American League at the Field of Dreams on Friday.
Both teams came out to win with heavy bats driving their balls to the outfield, but fielding was better than they had faced in the season and both team had to adjust. National League was able to adjust their bats with the most efficiency and win the game, 17-14.
The National League brought the bats first with deep hits and a homerun by Justin Smith, outfielder, who got one run batted in. When the American League stepped up to the plate in the first inning they hit two pop flys that were caught and got their third out at first.
The National League took the lead in the first inning scoring runs, but began the second inning like the American League ended the first with two pop flys and an out at first.
The National League dugout joked, “Just because we hit it hard doesn’t mean it’s going to work. We need one of those Wal-Mart bats that no matter how hard you hit it, it stays in the infield.”
The American League ended the second inning with more controlled hits instead of just smashing the ball as hard as possible which helped them to tie with the National League in the second inning, with two runs.
Before starting their bats for the start of the third inning, Derrick Alderete, head coach for the National League All-Stars team, spoke with his team in the dugout.
“If you’re not a home run hitter,” said Alderete. “Then focus more on getting onto base than hitting the ball as hard as you can.”
Shannon Edmonds, catcher for the National League All-Stars team, hit a triple to start the third inning off and was batted in by Michael Jordan, pitcher for the National League All-Stars team. The National League scored a total of two runs in the third inning making their score 4.
The American League refuse to be out hit in the third inning though and came out swinging smart making sure to place their balls in the National Leagues weakest spots. The American League kept their bats low and put a homerun under their belts.
The third inning was ended with a double play at first and second base by the National League. It ended in runs with a score of American League 6, National League 4.
“Come on!” said Jordan. “The only difference is the bats. We need to start bringing our bats now and score.”
Even after the comments from their pitcher the National League continued to hit pop flys that were easily caught by the American League, but were able to score two runs in the fourth inning to tie up the game, 6 to 6.
Both teams joked with one another at the start of the fifth inning, and the National showed their smart hitting skills and smart calls from the base coach to score five runs that inning. The American League brought their bats with a home run. The American League also showed their fielding skills with a diving catch but dropped it when they hit the ground. The National League continued to lead 11 to 9 at the end.
The National League started out the sixth inning with two home runs from Justin Smith and Courtney Boston, but the American League brought a home run of their own to the sixth inning, but were unable to score anymore runs.
Going into the last inning of the game, the National League new they needed to get more runs on the board to hold the American League. National League continued their home run streak, hitting two more home runs in a row and scored two more runs before American League came up to bat.
Even though the American League had the advantage of batting last they were unable to gain enough runs to win the game. The National League won, 17-14. Both teams shook hands and joked around while leaving the field.
