MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Quantico Middle/High School honored its athletes during their Fall Athletic Awards assembly at the school, Nov.14.

There were certificates and plaques given to individuals on each team. The teams recognized were: middle school soccer, varsity cheerleading, varsity football, varsity volleyball and varsity cross country.

The distinguished awards were presented to the most valuable offensive and defensive players and most improved player. All of the awards were also followed by parting words of wisdom and encouragement from their coaches who had shown them the ropes.
“These teams have learned something through the good times and the bad throughout their season,” said Paul Roy, athletic director. “The kids who started with the programs and ended with the program, no matter if they were with a winning or losing team, are my definition of real athletes.”

The middle school soccer team finished their season with a winning record of 7-4 and were presented with certificates for their achievements. For the 16-4 volleyball team, Robert Hume and Mitchell Jeneva, volleyball co-coaches, presented their team with certificates as well as plaques for the two most valuable players and most improved player. The two MVPs were Marquis, 10 grade and Brianna, 10 grade. The most improved player was Kelsie, 12th grade.

“We had a really good season,” Hume said. “They put in the hard work that was required to be a really good team. We have great athletes on the team who communicated well without any attitude and I really appreciate that. I couldn’t be prouder of the effort the girls put in.”

The football team finished their season with a 0-10 record. The first year head coach for Quantico, Mike Green, presented his team with their awards including the offensive and defensive MVPs, Alec, 11th grade, and John, 12th grade.

The cross country team’s awards were handed out by head coach Joshua Thom. Beside their certificates, he also announced the All-State runners: Brianna, ninth grade; Elise, ninth grade, Kathryn, eighth grade; Chris, ninth grader; and Tyler, ninth grade.
“Many people believe that athletes don’t study,” said Michael Johnson, Quantico principal. “But here we are all about scholars and athletes. The children will always be students first and then earn the privilege to be athletes. I’m very proud of each and every one of these athletes who are being recognized today.”
