Orange, Va. – The Quantico Middle/High School Varsity Cross Country Team packed up their gear and headed to Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va., to compete in the 47th Virginia Independent Schools Cross Country Championship on Friday.

After placing second and fifth in the Delaney Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Nov. 1., Quantico accepted the challenge of running side-by-side against nearly 500 other runners from 29 other schools in their division.

“Last week the team blew me away, said Joshua Thom, co-head coach for Quantico. “They pushed my expectations above what I thought was possible for them. I’m hoping they put in that same effort, if not more, at the state level.”

The Quantico runners did their best not let their coaches down as they competed against the top high school runners in the state. In the women’s’ division, out of 29 other schools, Quantico placed 13th, while Peninsula Catholic High School, from Newport News, took first place. In the men’s division, out of 21 other schools, Quantico placed 13th, while Veritas Christian Academy, from Chesapeake, came in first place.

“They exceeded my expectations yet again,” Thom said. “This was a fantastic race. I haven’t had any All-State runners in Quantico since the early 2000s. They really took it to the next level.”

The top 20 runners, in both the men’s and women’s divisions, placed and received medals. Two of Quantico’s runners placed: Kathryn, eighth grader, who placed 11th with a time of 21 minutes and 30 seconds; and Tyler, ninth grader, who placed 17th with a time of 18:35.

“This team has been a big part of my life,” said Casey, Quantico team captain. “I think it was a great way to end the season. The coaches did a great job to motivate us and the team made this year a most enjoyable experience.”
