CAMP H.M. SMITH - The 1st Battalion, 12th Marines Regiment Savages ravaged the 3rd Marine Regiment Panthers, 45-6 at Borderlon Field, Camp Smith, Tuesday.

The Panthers left themselves open to attack with a loose defense line, which the Savages took advantage of right from the start to gain an early lead on the board. The Panthers tightened up their defense in the second quarter to slow the Savages advance, but were still down 0-16 in the half.

Troy Bader, the Panthers coach, warned this was where the opposition started to wear them down and discussed players switching positions on the field to suit their strengths and confuse the competition.

“Don’t worry about the scoreboard,” Bader said to his team at the half. “We lost a lot of guys today. We’re short at least six guys and a lot of them were on the line.”

Bader reassured the team they were still in the game, but absorbing the player deficit took its toll on the Panthers as the Savages scored 16 more points in the third quarter.

Fatigued, losing ground, and still nothing to show for their efforts, the Panthers fell even further behind in the final quarter, being walked back by false starts and losing critical yards to fumbles.
Across the field, the Savages chanted a taunting “Shut out! Shut out!” to the beleaguered Panthers, motivating the trailing team to score. The Panthers knuckled down and dug out their offence and ran in a touchdown to put themselves on the board in the last five minutes of the game.

Though defeat was inevitable, the Panthers blocked the victorious Savages from getting their expected shut out.

Bader told his team after the game to ignore the scoreboard, they had played their hearts out despite a good chunk of their line players missing.

“We played hard and we only had 20 people so we were short,” Bader said. “I’m not making excuses, we just need consistency and practice. All that matters is the playoffs.”

Tony Breeding, a Savages coach, said his team played well defensively and offensively.

“Our defense came out to play tonight. We came to prove that we have the best defense and offence in the league and I think we did. We overcame adversity in practice and the guys showed a lot of character tonight and we executed well.”

The Savages have lost only one game this season to the Headquarters Battalion Warriors. Breeding said he and his team will be ready for their meeting.

The Savages will play their next game against the undefeated Headquarters Battalion on Borderlon Field, Oct. 30.
