News: ‘Black Jack’ remembers fallen soldier
Story by Sgt. Quentin Johnson
FORT HOOD, Texas – “And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the Soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave,” American poet Joseph Drake said.
To pay honors to their fallen, the 1st Battalion “Mustangs,” 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, hosted a memorial to pay last respects to Pfc. Jong Dal Lee at Ironhorse Chapel here, Oct 24.
Lee died Sept. 23.
He arrived here August 2010 and was an infantryman with Company A., 1-8 Cav. He deployed once to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn.
Liked by many, Lee had a great character and promising attributes for such a young soldier.
“Lee was highly disciplined, motivated and a promising young soldier,” Capt. Patrick Howlett, A Company commander said. “He was well liked by all.”
Howlett explained most importantly, Lee was a person who pushed himself beyond his own physical limitations.
During my last deployment I needed a hard worker as my driver, Staff Sgt. David Soto said. “Lee was proactive, didn’t mind getting his hands dirty and pushed hard until the job was done.”
His attributes were that of a true leader, Soto, an infantryman with A Company said. “Good leadership does not take a ‘one size fits all’ approach, Lee’s leadership example was one for his peers to follow.”
Lee also had a great personality and cared for friends, Soto stated. “When it came to personal details, (Lee) played it closer to the heart.”
“Above all else, he was a great friend to many, many people,” Howlett explained. “His loss will be felt by many.”
Mustang Chaplain Capt. Andy Jenks said “No doubt that each of us in this assembly feels the grief of a soldier who left us far to young.”
Jenks added grief would bring healing and we should focus on rejoicing in Lee’s life.
“The memories and love we share for Lee can never be taken from us and should inspire us to live each day in the sunshine of life,” Jenks said.
Lee is survived by his father, mother and grandmother.
