PAKTIKA, Afghanistan – District governors from western Paktika province, along with Afghan security officials, held the first Western Paktika Province Governors’ Shura (meeting) at Forward Operating Base Super, Oct. 1.
The meeting gave the men an opportunity to discuss the things which matter most to their respective districts. The most important topic of discussion was security.
“If we are not secure, we cannot have anything,” said Mateen, Yousef Khel District Governor. “The priority has to go to security.”
Afghan Local Police expansion ties heavily into security as both coalition forces and Afghan officials realize the value of having a security force at the village level.
“The development of the ALP enables Afghans to take responsibility for their villages’ security,” said a coalition Special Operations Forces adviser.
The shura also gave the district officials the chance to plan important initiatives for their areas. Education, job development, women’s and youth rights were high on their list of possible future programs.
“The problems and initiatives we have are the same all throughout Afghanistan,” said Haji Naeem, Zarghun Shar District Governor. “We have to come together to discuss all of these things so we can plan together.”
