FORT KNOX, Ky. - Soldiers from Cherokee Troop, 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment helped the staff and students of Lincoln Trail Elementary School refurbish their outdoor playground and their teacher memorial. This helped ensure a smooth start to the beginning of the school year.

    C. Troop sent six soldiers to Lincoln Trail Elementary school on Aug. 29 to provide maintenance to their outdoor facilities. The soldiers arrived at the school in the morning and immediately got to work spreading three 2,000-pound bags of rubber mulch evenly across the playground. After that, the soldiers got to work refurbishing a teacher memorial on the school’s campus.

Lincoln Trail Elementary School, which is located in Elizabethtown, Ky., provided shovels, rakes, mulch and grass seeds for the soldiers to help spruce up their outdoor facilities in recognition of the new school year. C. Troop has revitalized their relationship with Lincoln Trail Elementary since 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division’s redeployment from Afghanistan in January.

Cherokee Troop commander, Capt. Chad Chenoweth said there are a lot of reasons why building a positive relationship with the school is important to him.

“We worked with Lincoln Trail last year, so we wanted to continue that relationship this year as well,” said Chenoweth. “Lot’s of the soldiers on Fort Knox have children that attend [Lincoln Trail], so we are giving back to the community that we are ultimately a part of.”

When all the work tasks for the day were complete, the soldiers ate lunch with some of the students in the school’s cafeteria and gave them a chance to strengthen personal relationships within the student body.

    C. Troop Platoon Leader, 1st Lt. Michael Capomaggi said everyone involved had a great time giving back.

“Six soldiers participated in the event. Their favorite part was eating lunch with the students in the cafeteria and getting the chance to interact with them,” said Capomaggi “The teachers, staff, and students enjoyed having us out there and expressed great appreciation for the work we did.”

With their school’s outdoor facilities now looking good, Lincoln Trail Elementary is made ready for another great year of education with the assistance of the Cherokee Troop soldiers.
