FORT STEWART, Ga. — Five soldiers with the 24th Finance Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, rolled into the Hilton Head, S.C., community, Sept. 7, to showcase some military equipment as part of The Children’s Sandbox Museum’s family fun night.

“We brought two of our everyday vehicles, an up-armored [high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle] and an up-armored [light-medium tactical vehicle],” said 1st Lt. Richard McManamon, a platoon leader with the 24th Finance Company, 3rd Sustainment Brigade. “We want to show the Hilton Head community what we have and who we are.”

The September family fun night is one of the Sandbox’s most popular events.

More than 100 children and parents came out to enjoy the display of Army vehicles, a fire truck, an electric company truck and a tow truck.

“We love the interaction that they’re having with all the professionals here,” said Anne Finn, director of public relations and development for the Children’s Sandbox Museum. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids to learn about what it takes to move and run these vehicles. They can see it’s not an easy thing to do, and it gives them something to shoot for in the future.”

The children—whose ages ranged from 18 months to about 8 years old—had the opportunity to go in and out of the vehicles and see all of the tactical gear that the soldiers have to wear.
Soldiers, like Spc. Justin Klimas, a mechanic with the 24th Finance Co., said he enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the children.

“It was great to see all the smiles on the kid’s faces, and now they know what we experience on a daily basis,” he said.

The idea of family fun night is for working families to come enjoy the interactive museum for free. It occurs on the first Friday of each month with a different theme.

“I think that giving back to the community like this is a great thing because it shows the other side of soldiers.” Sgt. Jeffrey Sellers, a mechanic in 24th Finance Company said, “They can see a lighter side of us, not just the seriousness of a soldier in combat.”

Finn expressed her appreciation for the soldiers who attended.

“When we have our military out here interacting with the public it increases the knowledge and visibility of who is out there protecting us.”
