PHILIPPINE SEA – Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Edwin Lopez, son of Gioconda Acevedo and Alberto Lopez of Los Angeles, Calif., is currently serving aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) during a scheduled deployment.
Lopez works in the supply department and his job helps to provide the crew with personal necessities as well as essential items required to carry out the mission.
“I feel that my job is pretty diverse because we handle all types of consumables including flight clothing, toiletries or valves,” said Lopez.
Logistic specialists are also storekeepers. With a crew of only 10 aboard Bonhomme Richard, they are responsible for 16 storerooms and efficiently maintain them by conducting inventories and location audits.
“I like the fact that we are essential anywhere,” said Lopez. “Everywhere you go, whether shore duty or forward deployed, logistics specialists will be there to supply personnel with just about anything.”
Lopez said he enjoys meeting people from all over the world.
“The U.S. Navy gives you the opportunity to meet a great deal of people from all over the world,” said Lopez. “You get to see places that most people won't in their lifetime and the Navy provides you with benefits whether you stay in or decide to get out.”
Lopez served during one of the largest humanitarian operations in history, Operation Tomodachi which was initiated after a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck northeastern Japan March 11.
“I am proud to serve my country,” said Lopez. “In the last four years, I have participated in a humanitarian assistance mission Operation Tomodachi, saved a person's life, became a search and rescue swimmer, was part of a hull swap and provided assistance to our fellow Marines.”
The Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group is scheduled to participate in several exercises that will provide training to help enhance security, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. The exercises include the amphibious landing exercise, amphibious integration exercise and certification exercise.
“I plan to take a break from the military soon to earn my bachelor's degree in the environmental science field and possibly become a commissioned officer.
Lopez graduated from Burbank High School in Burbank, Calif., in 2004.
Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Capt. Daniel Dusek, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group and is currently operating in the 7th Fleet area of operations.
