PACIFIC OCEAN – Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 3rd Class (AZ3) Robert Cuevas, a Portsmouth, Va., native, is currently serving aboard the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

Cuevas works in the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department and his job as an AZ requires him to manage and update master copies of all maintenance instructions as well as the monthly maintenance plans for aircraft aboard Bonhomme Richard.

“My rate is very important in the U.S. Navy aviation field,” said Cuevas. “We help make sure that the logs and records of aircraft maintenance are properly recorded which helps to avoid damage, injury or even death.”

Although Cuevas is junior in rank he is responsible for many important tasks that have a huge impact on his division and department.

“I feel like I make an impact in our department’s mission,” said Cuevas. “Even though other people don't see it, I know it's important for me to complete my work each and every day, whether it's a high priority or not.”

While achieving success so far in U.S. Navy, Cuevas also has goals for life after the military.

“I plan on going to college in the future and maybe one day working in the information technology field, said Cuevas.

Cuevas is the son of Dwayne and Renee Sorrell who currently reside in San Diego. His dad Dwayne is a chief warrant officer, currently serving aboard amphibious transport dock, USS Green Bay (LPD 20).

The Navy takes pride in its sailors ability to be hard working and always prepared. The foundation of the Fleet is its sailors who lead by example and remain dedicated to the Navy’s mission.

He said that he joined the Navy so that he could get money for school and see parts of the world that most people never get to.

“I think what I like the most about being in the Navy is that I’m able to be stationed in Japan, which I have always dreamed of,” said Cuevas. “Seeing all the different countries and meeting all of the people from different countries is a humbling and exciting experience.”

The United States Navy is founded on principles of courage, equality and fairness that have been instrumental in presenting many ideas to the world – through the selfless service of upstanding men and women and through the pride, purpose and professionalism that comes through in all they do.

USS Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Capt. Daniel Dusek, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group and is currently on deployment in the 7th Fleet Area of Operations.
