HERAT, Afghanistan, – The Italian army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Claudio Graziano, with Paolo Romani, from the X Commission (Production, Trade and Tourism Activities) of the Chamber of Deputies, the Operational Land Force Command (COMFOTER), Lt. Gen. Roberto Bernardini and Ambassador Luciano Pezzotti, visited the Italian contingent engaged in ISAF Operations.
General Graziano was received by Brig. Gen. Luigi Chiapperini, the commander of Regional Command West (RC-W), who accompanied him on a visit to various FOBs (Forward Operating Base) still patrolled by Italian soldiers: "FOB Columbus" Bala Mourghab, "FOB Lavaredo" in Bakwa, "FOB Dimonios" in Farah and "FOB LA Marmora" in Shindand.
He also assisted in the donation of towers for the lighting of the stadium near the international airport in Herat, a project promoted by Deputy Romani, when he was the Minister of the Economic Development Department. The project was executed primarily through the hard work and commitment of ENEL and Terna SpA.
Presiding at the event was the Governor, Dr. Daud SABA and the President of the Provincial Council of Herat, Mr. Abdoul Faizadeh.
General Graziano also met in Kabul with Gen. Allen, ISAF commander, who praised the work of the Italian military contingent in western Afghanistan as well as the fact that the transition process is making great strides in accordance with the stabilization timeline.
Before leaving, General Graziano met with and addressed the Bersaglieri Brigade "Garibaldi" troops stationed at Camp Arena, the headquarters of Regional Command West. He stated, "The transition process is progressing as scheduled because of your commitment, and it is a significant and important moment.
“I congratulate you all for what you did and how you did it."
