CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – As the drawdown continues, the time has come for another battalion to wrap up their tour in Afghanistan.
Marines and sailors with 1st Maintenance Battalion (-) Reinforced, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Forward) participated in a casing of the colors ceremony at Camp Leatherneck, Aug. 23.
Lt. Col. Chris Richardson, 1st Maint. Bn., (-) Rein., Commanding Officer and Master Gunnery Sgt. Robert Johns, Battalion Sergeant Major, cased the battalion’s colors during the event.
“Being able to take on this challenging mission of providing tactical logistics support throughout the battle space has been absolutely tremendous,” said Richardson.
From Maintenance Company, who maintained a 95 percent equipment readiness with their quick and efficient ability to repair an endless array of equipment, to Surgical Co., who excelled when faced with mass casualty situations, the members of 1st Maint. Bn. affected multiple aspects in the area of operations.
Among the battalion’s accomplishments, General Support Motor Transport Company conducted dozens of combat logistics patrols and provided security for local nationals, transporting 800,000 gallons of fuel to forward operating bases.
Brig. Gen. John J. Broadmeadow, Commanding General, 1st MLG (Fwd), spoke to the Marines and sailors at the ceremony about his view of their success throughout Regional Command (Southwest).
“When you look at my priority number one, to provide exceptional tactical logistics support, this battalion has done it in great fashion,” said Brig. Gen. Broadmeadow.
With the number of service members in Afghanistan dropping, the mission to send excess supplies back to the U.S. has been a focus over the last year. The battalion played a significant role in retrograde operations.
“Supply Co. has reduced from the largest intermediate supply activity in the Marine Corps down to the most efficient and effective,” said Brig. Gen. Broadmeadow. “These Marines and sailors standing behind me have worked incredible hours across a broad range of activities throughout this entire battle space, and have made me proud every single day.”
During his speech to the attendants of the ceremony, Richardson expressed his amazement with the outstanding work of each company in his command, and thanked the Marines and sailors for their individual impact.
“I could not be more proud of such a great group of professionals,” said Richardson. “This is one team; this is one fight. You have always done what I demanded first, and that is keeping your honor clean. It has been my absolute pleasure to be part of this team.”
