    ISAF Joint Command

KABUL, Afghanistan – The following is a message from Gen. John R. Allen, International Security Assistance Force commander:

“To the peace-loving and honorable people of Afghanistan:

    Salam-u-Alaikum!
    Eide shoma Mubarak (Dari)
    Akhtar – Mo, Mubarak-sha (Pashto)

On behalf of all the members of ISAF and their home nations, I would like to extend best wishes to you and your families for the up-coming Eid Al-Fitr.

As this Ramazan draws to a close, I continue to reflect on the values of Islam – charity, community, cooperation and compassion. These are values held dear by all peoples of faith. They are values that we at ISAF share in common with the noble and peace-loving people of Afghanistan.

I admire the commitment, devotion, and bonds of community symbolized by Ramazan. I am reminded every day of the resilience of the Afghan people. Their strength, combined with the values of community and cooperation, have enabled the people of Afghanistan to regain sovereign ownership of this proud nation’s future and overcome the dark days of the Taliban. And, at this year’s Eid al-Fitr, there is much to celebrate.

The Afghan people have emerged stronger. The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) have become a capable and professional force of more than 300,000 defenders of Afghan sovereignty. Soon, the majority of the population will live in areas under Afghan security lead – legitimate Afghan government forces are protecting the Afghan people. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan continues to extend governance, rule of law and access to justice, health care, and education, throughout the land.

The Afghan people are rejecting the cruelty and intimidation of the insurgents. And thousands of insurgents have chosen to renounce their lives of violence to return home, where they find honor and dignity in their communities. They are rejecting the unforgivable attacks on fellow Muslims directed by others living comfortably beyond Afghanistan’s borders. They are choosing peace and a place in Afghanistan’s brighter future.

I am proud to partner shona-ba-shona with the impressive and extremely capable Afghan National Security Forces – the true defenders of Afghanistan. This enormous success is merely the beginning. It is the dawn of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s future that continues to brighten each day.

Recognizing your strength, our nations have come together around the world – in Lisbon, Bonn, Chicago, Kabul and Tokyo – to demonstrate enduring commitment and support to you as you transform your nation’s destiny. NATO and the International Community will continue to stand by the people of Afghanistan into the Decade of Transformation, to ensure the dark clouds of the past never again eclipse the light of peace and unity that has returned to a people who have suffered too much.

So, let us hold on to the spirit of community and cooperation this year to achieve our common goals of peace, prosperity, and stability for all of the noble people of Afghanistan.

May almighty God bless you; may He bless your families; and may He bless this great nation of Afghanistan.

    Once again,

    Eid Mubarak.
    Manana,
    Tashakur”
