KABUL, Afghanistan -- Some Afghan media reporting Monday, Aug. 13, citing a recent meeting between Speaker Ibrahimi and Gen. John R. Allen, the ISAF commander, incorrectly reported that ISAF is planning to conduct operations with the Pakistani military inside Pakistan.
"This is not true. ISAF, by its mandate, is only permitted to conduct operations inside Afghanistan," said Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz, the ISAF spokesperson.
"ISAF continues to dialogue with the Pakistani military through the Tri-Partite Commission on ways to improve the security situation along the Afghan-Pakistan border," Katz said. "Part of this effort has included discussion of coordinating ISAF and Pakistani military operations on their respective sides of the border, as well as establishing border coordination centers, but ISAF forces are not planning to conduct operations inside Pakistan."
Allen and Ibrahimi discussed recent cross-border fire in Kunar province where mortar and artillery rounds have injured or killed Afghan civilians. The two agreed that this issue must be brought to the Tri-Partite Commission.
"ISAF continues to appreciate the improved relationship with the Pakistani military and we'll seek opportunities to deal with terrorism in the region," Katz said.
