Seventh annual Sprint Triathlon races through Camp Pendleton
CAMP PENDLETON, CA, UNITED STATES
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Marine Corps Community Services Semper Fit hosted its seventh annual Sprint Triathlon as part of the Hard Corps Race Series at Assault Craft Unit Five on Camp Pendleton, Aug. 4.
“The triathlon is held to help raise revenue in support of the Marines and sailors on base,” said Jill Prichard, a Hard Corps Race Series coordinator with MCCS Semper Fit. “It also offers an opportunity for civilians to come on base and see what the military has to offer.”
About 1,200 participants competed in the triathlon; 200 were service members.
“Active duty military members are able to compete for free,” said Prichard. “The good thing about having the race at ACU-5 is that it doesn’t obstruct traffic throughout Camp Pendleton.”
The race consisted of a 500 yard swim followed by an 18-mile road bike race and ending with a 3-mile run.
“The swimming portion was the most difficult because of the current,” said Sgt. Michael Wood, an adjutant with Legal Services Support Section. “I am satisfied with my time and how all of this was put together.”
Participants were able to run across one of the Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicles on display as they crossed the finish line.
“The run was the easiest part because the end was in sight and I knew I was almost done,” said Aaron Drews, a quality manager with INET Logistics. “I am happy with my time and with the race. It feels great to be on base and be able to see all the LCACs.”
Along with the triathlon, MCCS also held a kids race around the static displays.
“The children are able to run either a quarter or a half-mile around the LCACs depending on their age,” said Prichard. “Having these vehicles here adds extra excitement to the race.”
Each child received a medal and t-shirt for completing the race.
“This is a rewarding job to have,” said Prichard. “It’s incredible to see the service members participate and be able to unwind from their work and deployments.”
