SAN ANTONIO - During the Army Medical Department Center and School celebration of the 237th Birthday of the AMEDD Regiment July 27, Maj. Gen. Philip Volpe, AMEDDC&S commanding general, also presented Jean Sabido, the U.S. Army Certificate of Appreciation for patriotic civilian service.
While at the Jimmy Brought Fitness Center May 14, Sabido, a nurse with the AMEDDC&S Department of Nursing, along with another individual, performed basic life support with an automated external defibrillator for approximately 15 minutes to a stricken soldier until emergency medical services arrived.
That soldier happened to be Col. Robert Brigford, vice commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing.
“Jean proved that she knew what she was doing,” Brigford said, as he and his wife, Shirley, presented a bouquet of flowers to Sabido. “She did a tremendous job. I want to thank her for myself and on behalf of my family.”
Sabido was on the elliptical exercise machine when she heard a thud. She began chest compressions while another individual took care of the Bridgford’s airways.
“The saving grace was the AED.” Sabido said. “Having the AEDs in the gym was worth every penny.”
Sabido said by the time emergency services arrived the colonel was coming around.
“It was quite gratifying,” said when asked how she felt when the Bridgford was taken away. “I didn’t know then he had two kids, that you can make a difference.”
