BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The ability to keep Afghans informed is a critical component of successful International Security Assistance Force operations. The information includes news, music and also warns Afghans of natural disasters or even the danger of an improvised explosive device along main roads.

One way soldiers from 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Viking, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, assist with informing local Afghans is by distributing small hand crank AM/FM radios.

The effort to hand out this particular batch of radio was spearheaded by 1st Lt. George Keller. These radios are powered via built-in solar cell, a hand crank on the side, batteries, or a universal serial bus cable attached to a computer. They are perfect for the villages of Afghanistan where AC power or batteries might not be readily available.

Afghan Uniform Police stationed in Gor Teppa, distributed the radios to the villagers, as Task Force Viking members assisted with the effort. Keller coordinated the distribution prior to departing the checkpoint. The AUP officers were eager to assist the locals by providing them with this technology.

In addition to local broadcasts, there are also regular radio broadcasts of Afghan music, news and public service announcements.

Combined missions with AUP and Task Force Viking to distribute more of these radios are planned to continue as they are considered a success.

The 37th IBCT is deployed to northern Afghanistan in support of ISAF in order to build Afghan National Police capacity.
