    Story by Spc. Benjamin John

    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORt MCCOY- Wis.- A group of men and women have been competing against each other over the past year to become the next U.S. Army's Soldier and non-commissioned Officer of the Year.

Few have made it to the U.S. Army Reserve Command Best Warrior Competition and only two will move on to the Department of the Army Best Warrior Competition.

One soldier that is fighting hard, is Spc. Logan Romine.

Romine is from Fennimore, Wis., and is an intelligence analyst with the 86th Training Division representing the 84th Training Command. His sponsor, Staff Sgt. Jennifer Thetreau, who is a part of the 84th as well.

“He has grown in leaps and bounds,” said Thetreau. “I am very proud of him.”

Getting to this point in the competition has not been easy and Romine has received more support than he knows what to do with. Not only is his civilian employer showing support, Thetreau's employer is showing interest in helping out any way possible.

Romine remarked that his employer is interested in what he has to do during the competition and hasn't given him any trouble when he asks for work off to be a part of the BWC.

Also, members of Romine's family have shown their support to helping him achieve his goals.

“My sister helped me study,” said Romine. “My parents called me everyday when I was at regional and asked me how I'm doing.”

Along with moral back up Romine has another trick up his sleeve. He has the home field advantage. Fort McCoy is Romine's home away from home. He has qualified with his weapon here, gone to Warrior Leader Course here and has had the opportunity to perfect the land navigation course.

It is an advantage that showed itself during the night land navigation course on the second day of the competition. Romine reflected on his progress this far and is confident that land navigation is one of his strongest sections of the competition.

He said that he attributes most of his land navigation success to Sgt. 1st Class Zachary A. Zuehlsdorf, also a competitor, and his sponsor, Sgt. 1st Class Conrad Nazar. They are both Non-commissioned Officer Academy instructors with the 88th Regional Readiness Command.

No matter the obstacle, Romine is set up for success. He has two things going for him: great support and home field advantage.
