FORT MCCOY, Wis. — It’s a small room, with a sink in one corner and a bed in the other. Sgt. Anthony Mitchell, a broadcast journalist assigned to the 3rd Medical Deployment Support Command sits on the bed looking over a study guide for the Best Warrior Competition at Fort McCoy, Wis., July 14, 2012.
He asks about the camera. After looking it over he asks about the video quality and amount of time that can be recorded on it, true to his military occupational specialty. Mitchell mentions that he’s also done some print journalist work in addition to being a broadcaster. His intellectual curiosity is apparent.
Mitchell became a broadcaster in order to stay with his unit. Before Mitchell was a broadcaster, he was on active duty and served as a pharmacy technician. This is a career that mirrors his current civilian occupation as a pharmacy technician. He said, “My work in the civilian world benefits from my experience as a soldier, as it makes him more disciplined and vigilant.” Within the military, Mitchell said he wants to stay flexible as he’d like to deploy.
Just looking at Mitchell it is easy to see why he was the Army Combatives champion the last time he participated in the U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition in 2010. He’s very muscular and gives off the impression of a fighter with a fighter’s jaw.
Mitchell has a background in martial arts that is not limited to just one form. He has a black belt in karate and has also studied, taekwondo, and aikido. “I like all of them,” said Mitchell, “[It’s] kinda like art. If you like art, you don’t just like sculpting or painting.”
When asked about his family, Mitchell acknowledges that sometimes that his mother worries about him being in the service, but is supportive anyhow. He shows her his broadcast product too and keeps his family up to date about what he’s doing in the Reserve. He said this family know that he is currently here participating.
Mitchell said that he knows this year’s competition will be different than last time. However, he has trained with focus on his weakness from last time.
“There were a lot of things in the competition that were a big surprise,” said Mitchell about U.S. Army Reserve 2010 Best Warrior Competition.
He seems very confident despite not knowing the events that are to come in the upcoming week.
“I like to show my army training at work. This is what we do… This is a reserve unit, a reserve soldier. Though we’re not wearing the uniform every day; we’re considered soldiers 24/7. We’re not below average, or the standard. This is evidence of that,” said Mitchell.
