ANSF Destroy 4400 Pounds of IED Materials in Akazi

ZABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan soldiers of the 4th Commando Kandak, 205th Corps Afghan National Army, Nawbahar Afghan National Police, and partnered with coalition forces, discovered and destroyed multiple caches containing bomb-making materials near Akazi Village, Nawbahar district, July 6.

The cache discoveries were the result of a report made by a concerned citizen from Akazi who requested Afghan forces take action and seize the contraband.

According to a coalition representative, ANSF found and reduced over 4,400 pounds of Ammonium Nitrate and 30 pounds of explosives.

“The combined force conducted a 25 kilometer (movement) to locate and seize the caches, demonstrating the capability and responsiveness of the Afghan National Army 4th Kandak and denying the Taliban in Zabul province home made explosive (HME) precursors,” said a coalition representative. "The amount of chemicals destroyed was sufficient to make 125 improvised explosive devices (IED).”

He added that the lasting effects of the operation included increasing populace support for ANSF, reduction in the insurgents’ ability to influence the population and diminish the Taliban’s ability to conduct violent crimes against the local citizens.
