URUZGAN, Afghanistan – Uruzgan’s Provincial Governor, Amir Mohammad Akhundzada, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Tarin Kowt Road Project in the city of Tarin Kowt, Tarin Kowt district, June 30.
The ceremony, which was attended by approximately 200 people, marked the official commencement for construction of a six kilometer stretch of paved road in the city.
Eighty two thousand residents and travelers will enjoy better freedom of movement because of this project, said Wais Ahmad Barmak, the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. Once completed, the road will provide improved commerce and business for the region.
“The ceremony featured speeches from Provincial Governor Akhundzada, Minister Barmak, the Honorable Obaiduallh, the Honorable Qazi Mohammad Amin Wiqad, and Mr. Paul Foley, the Australian Ambassador to Afghanistan,” said a coalition representative. “Their speeches focused on various provincial topics including education, support of the Afghan government and regional security.”
One of the speakers emphasized the importance of the public’s support of the Afghan government and its connection to regional development and security, said the coalition representative. Another theme was the value of teamwork and how Uruzgan can achieve better security and improved regional development through cooperation.
The road is being funded through the Afghan Peace and Reintegration Program, said the coalition representative. The Tarin Kowt Road Project will cost approximately $2.8 million and will be built by Afghans via the MRRD.
Afghanistan is getting better every day, summarized Akhundzada. In order to continue to progress, we need peace.
“Tell those not in formation with us to come join us,” said Akhundzada. “As President (Karzai) says, ‘if you stand with us we can do a lot together.’”
