CAMP VICTORY, Iraq – Gen. David H. Petraeus assumed command of Multi-National Forces-Iraq at a change of command ceremony at Al Faw Palace today.

His predecessor, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., will soon serve as the next Army Chief of Staff.

Petraeus said he felt honored to return to Iraq to lead the coalition military forces.

"I pledge to do all that I can to provide all the best leadership, direction and example I can muster," Petraeus said.

He also recognized that the challenges ahead are substantial and the burdens would have to be shared by all in order to succeed.

"Hard is not hopeless," he said. "Together with Iraqi forces, the members of our coalition will do all that we can to help you make the most of the opportunity to build a new country free of the fear of the Saddam Era."

Petraeus served twice in Iraq previously as commanding general of 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) from 2003-2004 and commander of Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq 2004-2005.

Casey expressed his appreciation for Iraqi and coalition forces support throughout his time in Iraq.

"It has been my privilege to be part of your team for the past 30-plus months, and it has been an honor to serve with each of you," Casey said. "I want to thank the Iraqi people for welcoming me into their country and into their communities."

Casey encouraged the Iraqis to put their past behind them. He said Iraq has come a long way since achieving sovereignty 2 1/2 years ago, and they will continue to move forward with the support of coalition forces.

"I have absolute confidence in the competence and professionalism of the men and women of the coalition force," Casey said. "I also have confidence in the men and women of Iraqi Security Forces, and I have no doubt they will emerge over the coming years as the dominant security force in Iraq."
