Sgt Morales Club re-energizes to seek out top-notch NCOs

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Sgt. Morales Club members exemplify a special kind of leadership characterized by a personal concern for the needs, training, development, and welfare of soldiers.

Membership recognizes and rewards distinguished non-commissioned officers whose leadership achievements merit special recognition and who have contributed significantly to developing a professional NCO Corps and a combat-effective Army.

The Sgt. Morales Club was established in 1973 by Lt. Gen. George S. Blanchard to promote the highest ideals of integrity, professionalism and leadership for the enlisted forces serving in Europe.

The 7th Army NCO Academy located at the Grafenwoehr training area is re-energizing the club to give NCOs an opportunity to be recognized for embracing the traits and leadership qualities exemplifies by Morales.

Morales was well known for having a strong concern for the welfare of his soldiers and their families. He made sure that the members of his squad were trained in their military occupational specialties, and imbued the tactical know-how that makes a good soldier a better soldier.

“It’s what every leader should strive to be or do. You have to be a full spectrum NCO and mentor your soldiers. That’s what the club is about,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jesus Serrano, the Grafenwoehr Sgt. Morales Club President. “It’s a great organization and I’m proud to be part of it. It’s a great honor and it signifies the epitome of a NCO,” he said.

The club promotes and recruits soldiers by being involved with the community and participating in events such as fundraisers, ceremonies and extracurricular community activities. “It’s a club of stellar NCOs that have gained recognition for giving back to the community,” said Serrano.

A lot of times during community events, soldiers who show interest in the club will approach Serrano wanting to know what the club is about and what it stands for. “It’s the first step in becoming part of this organization.” he said.

NCOs must first be nominated by their unit’s senior leadership. “They are recognized by being involved with the community, taking care of their soldiers and setting the example,” said Serrano.

Once the NCO is nominated, there are four rigorous phases they must go through, which consist of several battalion and brigade level boards. “These boards are very different compared to NCO of the Year boards or promotion boards,” said Serrano. The Sgt. Morales board is geared more towards situational questions based on the NCO’s technical and tactical experience, he said.

Morales believed in leadership by example. He showed true concern for soldiers and their family members. He took great pride in his unit, and his country. Morales was a member of the NATO Team and an outstanding leader of soldiers.

On June 1, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. ten proud NCOs have committed to join the prestigious club, and will be inducted at the Rose Barracks Theater at in Vilseck, Germany, a ceremony open to the public.

We need to have NCOs that stand out among other soldiers so they can set the example and show their peers what “right” looks like, he said. They are the future of the NCO Corps and the U.S. Army.
