FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, had its family celebration day, May 5, here at Devil Field.

This was the brigade’s first celebration for military family members during a deployment, according to Angela Lindley, assistant family group leader for 1st BCT’s paratrooper families.

“This celebration was a way for the unit to show appreciation to family members and other organization that support them both on and off post,” said Melissa Finch, a family readiness leader for the 1st BCT.

Before the activities kicked off, Maj. Roger Wang, the rear detachment commander of 1-504 PIR, awarded certificates of appreciation to representatives of the Fayetteville United Service Organization, the American Red Cross and the Fayetteville Fire Department.

Following the presentation, a flurry of activities and socializing began. Parents and children made the rounds at puppet shows, face painting, balloon animals, sack races, and even a dunk tank.

Paratroopers were also on hand to give a guided tour of military vehicles, like the humvee and a Mark 19 grenade launcher, so that children could get an idea of what their parents do on a day-to-day basis when deployed.

Along with the military vehicles, one of the main attractions for the festivities was the Fayetteville Fire Department’s vehicle and equipment display.

“I think we’re all overjoyed by all the volunteers who came out to show their support and who took the time to help explain what they do for our community and our military families,” Lindley said.
