With their role supporting the Global War on Terrorism, the Marines and sailors of 3rd Marine Logistics Group have to always be ready to operate in an ever-changing combat environment.
To maintain that readiness the Marines and sailor at the MLG's Tactics Readiness and Training section constantly train Marines using the most up-to-date knowledge from the front lines.
"We are charged with ensuring that 3rd MLG remains in a high state of readiness," said Gunnery Sgt. Kevin J. Tierney, TRT's tactics chief.
TRT is responsible for providing deploying MLG Marines and sailors with their required pre-deployment training. The instructors are infantry Marines with combat experience.
One aspect of the training TRT provides is the combat marksmanship program. The goal of the program is to transition Marines away from the mindset of shooting at a rifle range and get them prepared to engage close-range targets in real world scenarios, according to Staff Sgt. William Augurson, a tactics instructor.
"The two-week course is designed to break Marines out of bad habits and teach them how to be self sufficient on the battlefield," Augurson said.
To assist with their training, TRT also runs the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer on Camp Kinser.
TRT also heavily emphasizes first-aid training, which is why they have a corpsman attached to them whose job is to teach Marines life saving skills and to teach corpsmen combat skills before deployment.
To help the MLG meet other annual training requirements, TRT instructors also train individual small-unit leaders to a level at which they are capable of passing on their skills to Marines in their units, according to Tierney.
"TRT provides the MLG with subject matter experts," Tierney said. "All the instructors hold infantry unit leader billets."
"3rd MLG must always be up on the latest training techniques," Augurson said. "The tactics being used in Iraq and Afghanistan are always being tuned and modified, and 3rd MLG must be ready for that."
