CENTRAL TRAINING AREA, OKINAWA, Japan -- For some Marines, walking through the woods with a compass in hand plotting points on a map is a distant memory from boot camp, Marine Combat Training or The Basic School. But for Marines with Combat Engineer Company, Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, the memory is a little fresher.
Marines with the unit set out to review basic land navigation skills to maintain mission readiness and improve their skills in the field Jan. 11 at the Central Training Area, according to 2nd Lt. Brent L. Kershaw, the 1st platoon commander with Combat Engineer Co.
Basic land navigation is the ability to navigate through any terrain while using a lensatic compass, map and techniques such as terrain association, a skill essential to the combat engineer military occupational specialty, Kershaw said.
