SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District recently completed construction on a $25.1 million Warrior in Transition Barracks Complex at Fort Stewart, Ga., to help wounded and injured soldiers rehabilitate or transition back into duty or civilian life. The complex is part of a three-stage development to improve the quality of life for soldiers during the healing process, as part of the Army’s Warrior Care and Transition Program.
“It is an honor to provide these first-rate facilities for our wounded and injured soldiers and their families,” said Corps Project Manager Bob Sauntry. “These facilities provide a convenient, stress-free environment, allowing them to focus on recuperating from their injuries.”
Clark Caddell Construction of Tampa, Fla., constructed the 144,600-square-foot barracks complex which includes two buildings and accommodates 240 soldiers. Each facility consists of two apartment-style floor plans. The first is a 1,350-square foot, two-bedroom, two-bath apartment with a shared kitchen, living room and laundry room. The second floor plan offers a 1,060-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a shared kitchen. Ten percent of the rooms are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, which means features such as countertops, bathrooms, cabinets and equipment will be easily accessible for a person in a wheel chair.
The barracks complex is located on Niles Avenue, adjacent to a 15,000 square-foot soldier family assistance center, which the Savannah District completed in June 2010. The $5.4 million facility, constructed by Alutiiq International Solutions, LLC of Huntsville, Ala., provides a one-stop location of support for WT’s and their families. The center is staffed with personnel who provide guidance, assistance, and information on finances, childcare, family advocacy, military personnel issues, logistics, legal assistance, and a variety of other support services to help speed the recovery of WT’s and help their families. The SFAC also includes a child activity center and playground area, covered courtyard, break room, and full kitchen.
Rounding out the complex is a 30,715-square-foot WT Administrative facility slated for completion in November 2012 by SFL+A Architects of Raleigh, NC. This facility will house the staff that manages the daily operations and activities of the recovering soldiers.
Like all Army construction, the WT Complex will incorporate environmentally friendly features. These “green” buildings will meet the criteria for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards. Eco-friendly features include the use of energy efficient building materials, lighting and ventilation systems.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District manages and oversees a multi-billion dollar military construction program at 11 Army and Air Force installations in Georgia and North Carolina.
