    APS-12: Planning for continued success

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES

    05.10.2012

Story by 2nd Lt. Peter Koerner

U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors of Security Cooperation Task Force Africa Partnership Station 2012 underwent stability operations training aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., recently.

The training is part of SCTF APS 12’s preparation for their upcoming deployment to Africa and was conducted by II Marine Expeditionary Force Special Operations Training Group. The stability operations training focuses on planning and executing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and noncombatant evacuation operations.

"The importance of the staff training is that it provides the Security Cooperation Task Force with additional capabilities should the need arise for us to come to the assistance of our regional partners," said Maj. Christopher J. Curtin, the commanding officer for SCTF APS 12. "The additional benefit of the training we are receiving in amphibious operations is that it serves as a re-education for many of us that have been, for the last decade, deploying in support of [Operation Enduring Freedom] or [Operation Iraqi Freedom] and have not had the opportunity to deploy aboard ship and work with our Naval counterparts."

Stability operations are part of the contingency operations that SCTF APS 12 may be called upon to perform while deployed later this year. The classroom training that the leadership took part in was the first step in a certification process that will conclude with a field exercise where the unit will be called upon to plan and execute one or more of these missions.

"The experience that the security cooperation task force is gaining through classroom training and practical application will allow them to properly execute the required missions," said Marty Klotz, the II MEF SOTG trainer and subject matter expect on interagency process and issues. "Once certified, [SCTF APS-12] will be able to take on certain contingencies including limited humanitarian assistance operations, medical and security reinforcement of an embassy, and provide a key piece of a noncombatant evacuation operation, as well as be able to participate in interagency and intergovernmental cooperation with the State Department, the [United Nations], and allied governments."
