HAWTHORNE, Nev. - Obstacles are no problem for the Nevada National Guard’s 609th Engineer Company. Even if it’s pitch black outside, these soldiers will find – or make – a way forward.
For most people, this is a big explosion.
But for the more than 55 soldiers with the Nevada National Guard’s 609th Engineer Company, it’s just another day of training. The 609th completed night demolition training, May 4-6, 2012.
The training consisted of building the obstacles to blow up, rehearsals and finally demolition.
As 2nd Lt. Richard Gilberti describes, this training is essential to mission readiness.
"Through the whole process, you see people getting closer, the team gets better, more efficient, more fluid," said Gilberti.
"The more training we do, the better we are as a team."
This gives soldiers, like Pfc. Ryan Dix, a high level of confidence in their fellow warriors.
"I trust everyone of these guys with my life," said Dix. "So, you know, if it’s me placing the demo, okay. If it’s somebody else, fantastic. I trust everyone of these guys with handling demo, for sure.
"I’m going to be on the ground, because I personally am going to be the one detonating the explosive. I just going to be laying on the ground. I’m probably going to feel it.
"The grounds going to shake, definitely. It’s going to be a pretty big boom."
