FORT STEWART, Ga. – At the sound of the metallic click of the non-commissioned officer sword being returned to its sheath, May 3, Command Sgt. Maj. Brendan P. McIntyre assumed responsibility of 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, on Fort Stewart, Ga.
At the ceremony, attended by soldiers and leaders from each “Vanguard” battalion, Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Barnes bade farewell to both 4th IBCT, where he served in three battalions and as the senior non-commissioned officer, and the Marne Division, in which he has served since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Col. Kimo C. Gallahue, commander of 4th IBCT, 3rd Inf. Div., said the ceremony was a fitting tribute to a man who has risen in the division from the ranks of platoon sergeant to command sergeant major, and thanked Barnes for his tremendous effort, insight and advice.
“In this short period of time [Command Sgt. Maj. Barnes] has demonstrated that he is the epitome of a senior non-commissioned officer—a straightforward, no-nonsense guy [and] a tough and caring leader of soldiers who every day has demonstrated his skill and concern for the soldiers of the “Vanguard” Brigade,” Gallahue said. “No one knows this brigade better than him.
“As this chapter ends, another one begins,” Gallahue continued. “Command Sgt. Maj. McIntyre comes on board; he has a remarkable resume and truly is the right man at the right time and for all the right reasons—he has my absolute trust and confidence.”
McIntyre joins 4th IBCT and the Marne Division from Fort Polk, La., after serving as the battalion command sergeant major for 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
McIntyre thanked his family for attending the ceremony before addressing the troops assembled before him.
“I am truly privileged to stand here today as the brigade sergeant major,” McIntyre said. “The history of this brigade, although just short eight years, is filled with honor, courage, selfless service, sacrifice and dedicated soldiers and family members that make up this premiere light infantry brigade.”
“I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we continue to build on the ‘Vanguard’ legacy.”
