KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – For injured service members that need more than a quick assessment from an aid station to return to duty, the Kandahar Warrior Recover Center is a place for them to start their healing process.

The Warrior Recovery Center is a residential and outpatient medical facility that provides short-term comprehensive and integrative care to warriors in southern Afghanistan.

“What the military has done was brought all the medical specialists together in one location so we can treat the whole service member,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Josh Duckworth, a native of Petaluma, Calif., Role III NATO Multinational Medical Unit, a neurologist at the Warrior Recovery Center.

The center is intended to offer a dignified setting that fosters rest, healing and recuperation that builds resiliency and confidence for a rapid return to duty.

”It’s the most worthwhile work I have done, I have been in the Navy for 18 years now,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. William Burns, a native of Mystic, Conn., a Navy reservist mobilized with Role III NATO Role MMU, a physical therapist at the Warrior Recovery Center. “It is clearly the most rewarding work I have done in my career.”

The center offers different programs that incorporate a multidisciplinary approach and a daily structure tailored to the unique clinical needs of each patient, such as those diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.

The Wounded Warrior Care Program treats patients with physical wounds that are expected to heal within a short period of time, and patients have the expertise of primary care and orthopedic providers, and physical and occupational therapists to help with their treatment.

“The WRC has become a high visibility center, so we get a lot of referrals to the program, and that come from outlying forward operating bases that may need some care, not necessarily mTBI care, but some other care,” said Burns.

The service members are very appreciative of the care they receive; they’re very highly motivated to return back to their jobs and units.

U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Sadawski, a native of Richmond, Va., 82nd Airborne Division said, “I’ve been to a lot of physical therapist, but I’ve never had someone as well rounded and experienced as the doctors here.”

“Before coming to WRC, I was not comfortable because I did not know who I was entrusting with my care,” said U.S. Army Spc. Paul Nace, a native of York, Pa., 623rd Quartermaster Company. “I know that WRC facility is helping with my recovery. The staff is very professional and knowledgeable in what they’re doing.”

Sadawski also stated that the doctors at her unit aid station initially wanted to send her back to her home station, but because of the care available at the WRC and the physical therapy she’s receiving, she is able to stay in country and get back in the fight.

The Warrior Recovery Center is a place where service members can receive the care they need without having to leave their units and receive some of the best care in Afghanistan.

“It makes our job a lot easier to be able to take care of service members here,” said Burns.
