TAKHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Several hundred villagers and elders in the Darqad and Khwajah Ghar districts, conducted a validation shura for their Afghan Local Police candidates, April 21.
More than 600 ALP candidates were validated during the shura. They will continue ALP training, which once complete, will enable them to secure their home villages and provide a secure future for their children.
The shura is the first of its kind in the district. Originally, the Takhar district was weary of the ALP program, but by the village elders validating the ALP candidates, it sends a strong message to insurgents that the district supports Afghan National Security Force efforts.
“When I first took over this province, it was destroyed by Taliban,” said Jabar Taqwa, the governor of Takhar province, during the beginning of the ceremony. He went on to mention that in order for their country to achieve peace, they must do something about it.
“Our flag flies high,” Taqwa said. “This means that we are now in charge, we are responsible for our country.”
The validation shura is the final agreement between the village elders and district leaders to train ALP. The shura has to be completed before the ALP candidates can continue their training.
“We appreciate all the help from foreign countries, however, it is time for us to stand on our own two feet,” Taqwar said. “It is important, now more than ever, that we stand up and protect our families, our villages.”
