MCLB Barstow, Calif. — Looking for something fun and entertaining to do with your family on base for free?
Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow’s library may have the answer. The last Wednesday night of each month, the library holds a free family game night for civilians, Marines, and their families at the base library.
During the event, families can enjoy an array of games, ranging from board and card games to a wide assortment of video games as well.
“Headquarters Marine Corps funds every base library, giving us money to purchase new board games and video games,” said Julie Bramman, the base librarian.
“We decided to have a family game night so everyone can have some quality time together at least once a month, but it doesn’t have to be the designated night to come down here.”
The library hours are Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Frday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Sundays.
The entire library area and conference room are open to families during game night, offering plenty of space to play games, with no need to sign up in advance to participate. “We want people to be comfortable in the space here,” said Bramman, a Portland, Ore., native.
“There are plenty of tables, bean bag chairs and couches for them to play the games at. New games are being added often so there is always a good selection to choose from.” Bramman hopes that this monthly event will help bring families closer together, even if it’s only for a few hours.
“One night my daughter asked me if I wanted to play Monopoly with her,” said Bramman. “All it takes is an hour from your day to relax and have a good time with your kids. Just leave work at work, focus on family and game time. I realized that even if we all are busy, this is something we need to do every so often.”
The library is also considering allowing patrons to check out the games, so families have the option of playing at home.
“We have games for young ages all the way up to teenagers. Video games are also popular here; we have a good set up if they wanted to play those too,” Bramman said.
Family game night is designed for everyone to have fun, relax and share some quality bonding time. For more information regarding family game night, contact Julie Bramman at (760) 511-6838.
