FORT BLISS , Texas - Fort Bliss military service members had the opportunity to challenge themselves and have fun during the annual Paintball Post Championship at Fort Bliss Biggs Park, April 14, 2012.

“This tournament is to get the soldiers out and give them something to do on their off time,” said Avery Z. Guillermo, sports coordinator for Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Avery also stated that this gives them the chance to compete for the Commander’s Cup and teaches them to work in small level groups, learn communication when they are working with each other and also what to expect from one another.

“This teaches us situation awareness for when you are playing in the field or when you are down range,” said Sgt. 1st Class Eric D. Alejandro, senior food operations sergeant with Company G, 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. “You have to know what’s going on out in the field, because when you’re playing you need to know where everybody is, and once you know where they’re at, you have an idea of where you can move, or if to move to get an angle on the enemy or contestant.”

Many of the participants there said that it was not all about winning but simply having a good time.

“I didn’t think we would win,” said Sgt. Jeremy B. Preshong, a flight medic with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade. “We just came to have fun.”

Preshong’s team won 1st place in the Paintball Post Championship. Second place was Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment and 3rd was the German Air force Command Air Defense Center.

“The event was pretty good,” said German Air Force Master Sgt. Carsten Wald, assigned to the German Air force Command Air Defense Center. “The field was awesome, the people were friendly and professional and the best thing is to get to know other people here, other units and have a good day.”

The MWR staff organized this tournament. They provided free air, paint and protective equipment for those participating. The bunkers and obstacles utilized on the field are called air bunkers and the layout used was the Paintball Sports Promotions Galveston.
