FORT HOOD, Texas – Yellow ribbons represent the supporting of troops. Pink ribbons are for breast cancer and Red stands for the fight again HIV and AIDS. Yet teal ribbons are clinging to the trees of the 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the division hung these ribbons, April 5, at the 1st Cav’s Headquarters to show its support.

“Every year we try to promote Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” said Sgt. 1st Class John Carreon, an equal opportunity adviser for the division.

SAAM is a nationally recognized observance. The Army has been observing April as SAAM for eights years now. This year’s focus is on sexuality.

“Being open and talking amongst your loved ones in regards to sexuality,” said Carreon. “What this does is help in the awareness of sexual assault and sexual violence.”

III Corps and Fort Hood will be conducing sexual assault training by means of a theatrical show call ‘Sex Signals.’

“The show involves interactive acting, role playing and audience participation,” he said.

The sexual assault prevention and response training will be held at Howze Theater, April 16-27 from 9-11 a.m.

III Corps started the month off with volunteers assisting in placing the ribbons throughout the corps’ headquarters and then spread from there.

“I volunteer as much as I can, so I was able to get several ribbons for the division,” said Carreon.

The awareness has also received full support from the division’s leadership.

“We consider the sexual harassment and sexual assault prevention strategy an integral part of our profession as soldiers,” said Capt. Michael Neel, the division’s public affairs planner. “These principles are based on respectable beliefs, the capacity of self-command, empathy and morale.”

Carreon said, the ultimate goal of the teal ribbons, the training, and the awareness is to educate soldiers on sexual assault prevention, sexual harassment and gender based misconduct.
